33-year-old woman docked for reckless driving, manslaughter

Lagos – A 33-year-old woman, Bola Stephen, who
allegedly caused the death of a man, Segun Adewale, 45,
through reckless driving, has been arraigned before
Ogudu Magistrates’ Court.
Police prosecutor, Ihiehie Lucky told the court on
Wednesday that the accused committed the offence on
Sept. 5 along Aina Ajayi St, Ifako-Gbagada road in Lagos
State.
He said that the Motor Traffic Division, Ifako office was
informed that Ihiehie alleged drove a Range Rover jeep
with Reg. No: EKY 910 DN recklessly and negligently on
the highway without regards to traffic laws.
The prosecutor also alleged that the accused drove the
vehicle in a dangerous manner which caused her to hit
the deceased, Segun Adewale and caused his death.
“The deceased was about to cross the road when the
accused ran over him.
“He was rushed to the hospital but gave up the ghost
before even reaching there,” he said.
According to him, the offences are contrary to the Lagos
State Road Traffic Law 2012 and are punishable under
section 19(1), schedule 1, item 45 and section 20 of the
Law.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-
count charge of dangerous and reckless driving and
manslaughter.
The defense counsel, Mr A.O Olusegun told the court
that the parties are negotiating settlement.
He said the accused and her family had participated in
the burial arrangements of the deceased.
“The accused’s family has equally furnished
considerable monetary commitment to the family of the
deceased who are equally ready to withdraw the case,”
Olusegun said.
He told the court that the two parties had agreed to
withdraw the case, adding that they intended to put a
letter of withdrawal before the court by the next
adjourned date.
Olusegun, then asked to stand as surety for the accused
in order to obtain bail.
Magistrate O. Sule- Amzat granted the accused bail in
the sum of N10, 000 with one surety.
The case was adjourned to Oct. 17.
